How to add a meta tag to Shopify (step-by-step guide)

Learning how to add a meta tag to Shopify is on every Shopify pre-launch checklist and with good reason. This small but extremely powerful tool will help your store stand out from the billions of search engine results and cement your top spot on the SERPs.

To learn more, read on and discover what meta tags are, how they influence your store and SEO, and how to add meta tags to products and collections on your Shopify store.

What are meta tags?

Meta tags are tags that help visitors and Google’s algorithms understand what your store is about.

When a store is viewed from search engine results, you will usually see a title, a URL, and a small description that helps describe what lies behind the URL. With Shopify, you can change two tags: the tile and the description.

These tags help Google determine who to show content to and help visitors choose the most query-relevant search option.

How do meta tags influence SEO?

Let’s say you have a store that sells hiking gear and it shows in the title and description that you sell hiking gear.

If someone searches for baby clothes and finds your content – which will show them you sell hiking gear – they won’t click on it. Google will then remove you from these searches.

But if people are searching for hiking gear, see you sell hiking gear from your meta tags, and click on your store, then Google will consider your content the right content. You will then show up in hiking gear searches.

The more someone clicks on your content, the higher you will appear on these search results.

It makes it so much easier to stand out when you launch your Shopify store. Instead of having to fight every store in the world for consumers, you only have to duke it out with other stores who also occupy that meta tag.

But how do you add meta tags to your products and collections? Fortunately, one of the benefits of Shopify is how easy they have made it to add meta tags to your store. You can do it right from your Merchant Dashboard without having to know any coding.

How to add meta tags to Shopify

Step 1: Log in to Shopify

First, you will need to log in to your Shopify account with your unique login details. This will take you to your Shopify Merchant Dashboard. Here you can control your entire store including creating landing pages and adding a Shopify theme.

Step 2: Go to products or collections

Next, you will need to go to the product or collection that you want to change the meta tag of. To do that:

  • On the Merchant Dashboard, navigate to the left-hand side menu.
  • On this menu, search for the section labeled Products. Click on the Products section.
  • If you want to edit a product’s meta tag, click on the All Products tab.
  • If you want to edit a collection’s meta tag, click on the Collections tab.

Step 3: Edit website SEO

Now we’ll go to Shopify’s built-in website SEO editor. It works like most other text editors and is easy to use and navigate.

  • Search for the product or collection you want to add a meta tag to. When you have found the product or collection, click on it to edit it.
  • On the new page, scroll until you find the window labeled Search engine listing preview. This gives you a preview of what your product or collection looks like on search engines.
  • On this window, to the top right corner and click on the Edit website SEO option.
  • On the new page, add the title of the product or collection and the meta description.

To optimize the meta tags, make sure your meta title is 70 characters or less. For the meta description, aim to have 320 characters or less. It’s also important to add your keyword to the front of your title and your description.

Don’t try and stuff the description with keywords. Google is smart enough to recognize keyword stuffing and won’t find it helpful in describing your content or product. Besides being penalized, it will also look bad to store visitors.

Step 4: Save and exit

  • Press the Save button after you have added your meta tags.
  • Return to the Search engine listing preview and check that your preview looks good and coherent. To boost your store, consider adding social media links to Shopify. Social media-related traffic will boost your search engine rankings.

Why is my meta description not showing?

Either your meta tags are over the character limit – which we discussed above – or your store needs to be indexed by google again. To do this, go to Google Search Console, create an account, and request that your website be reindexed.

Reindexing can take anywhere from 24 to 72 hours so give it some time before checking your search engine preview.
