One of the advantages of Shopify is how easy the process of adding social media to the store is.

There are two main ways of adding social sharing icons to Shopify. One method is easy and one is more advanced.

Unfortunately, because the social media icons you add to Shopify are linked to the theme you use, there might be some limitations. These limitations will influence which method you need to use.

If the theme published to your store does now allow you to add social media icons through the first method, then you can give the second method a try.

Method 1: Add social media icons to Shopify through the theme options

Step 1: Log in to Shopify

Log in to your Shopify account with your unique login details. This will take you to your Shopify Merchant Dashboard, where you can make backend changes including adding a domain and creating a Shopify collection page

Step 2: Go to the theme customization option

  • On the Shopify Merchant Dashboard, go to the left-hand side of the page. On the sidebar will be a menu. Scroll down this menu until you find the section labeled Online Store. Click on Online Store
  • On this new section on the sidebar, click on the Themes tab.
  • You will now be on a new page that is dedicated to all your Shopify Themes. On this page, go to the theme currently published on your store. To the right of the theme will be a button labeled Actions and another labeled Customize. Click on the Customize button.

Step 4: Manage the current theme’s settings

  • The new page will take you to the Theme Editor. On the Theme Editor, you will be able to make all sorts of theme changes, including changing the colors, font, layout, etc. Skip past these and choose the Theme settings options.
  • On the new page, navigate to the Social Media option and click on it.

Step 5: Add the social media icons to Shopify

  • On the new page, go to the left sidebar until you find the Social Accounts heading. Under this heading, there will be blank text slates to add your social media URLs.
  • Under the Social Account section, you can add the most commonly used social media accounts and the ones supported by your Shopify theme. Find your store’s social media profiles, copy the URLs, and paste them into the corresponding social media text bars. Double check the URLs are in the right spots before moving on.
  • Next, press Save at the bottom of the editor.
  • Go to your store URL. The social media icons should now be available at the bottom of your store, in the theme footer. Click on the icons to make sure they work.

Method 2: Manually add social media to Shopify

If your store does not support the easy method, you can use the next method to manually add a social media asset to the theme. You can also submit a task with a Shopify developer for these types of custom features.

Step 1: Log in to Shopify

Log in to Shopify with your unique login details.

Step 2: Go to Themes

  • Under the Online Store option, choose the Themes tab.

Step 3: Add a social media asset to Shopify

  • On the next page, find the Assets folder. Assets are small, individual packages of code snippets that change images, styles, or theme layouts.
  • After clicking on the Assets folder, you will be taken to a new page. On this new page, scroll down until you see the option labeled Add a new asset. Click on Add a new asset
  • Next, there will be a list of icon files. On this list, find the icon you want to add to your store and click the Upload asset button.

Step 4: Add the icon to store through the code

  • The icon will be saved as a .png file, which you can rename to fit with the social media you are adding, for example, Facebook-button.png.
  • Next, go to your Shopify theme.liquid code. Go to the same Online Store > Themes option as before and click on the Actions button to the right of the published theme.
  • On the dropdown menu, choose the Edit code option.
  • Here you can add meta tags to Shopify and make other impressive backend changes. For now, go to the sidebar to add the code to the theme snippets.
  • To add it to your footer, go to the footer.liquid section and add your code. To add it to your header, add it to the header.liquid section.
  • The code should contain a link to the social media account. It will look something like this:

{{ ‘facebook-button.png’ | asset_url | link_to:

‘’, ‘Follow our journey on Facebook’ }}

  • Once you have added the necessary information, click on the Save button. Return to your store and make sure the social media icons are working.
