Shopify is a powerful e-commerce platform that can help you take your business to the next level. It has all the features you need to grow your business online, including a shopping cart, product management, order fulfillment, and more.
Migrating from Big Cartel to Shopify is not difficult, but there are a few things you need to know before you start. This article will give you a step-by-step guide to migrating your store from Big Cartel to Shopify.
Why should you transfer from Big Cartel to Shopify?
Shopify has more features and is more customizable than Big Cartel
One of the main reasons why people move to Shopify is because it offers more features and is more customizable than Big Cartel. With Shopify, you can add apps from the Shopify app store to extend the functionality of your store. There are also many themes available that you can use to customize the look and feel of your shop.
Shopify is more scalable than Big Cartel
Another reason to migrate from Big Cartel to Shopify is that Shopify is a more scalable platform.
Scalability is the ability of a system, network, or process to handle a growing amount of work, or its potential to be enlarged to accommodate that growth. As your business grows, you will need a platform to grow with you. Shopify is much more scalable than Big Cartel.
With Shopify, you can start on their basic plan and upgrade to a higher one as your business grows. With Big Cartel, you are stuck on the same plan unless you want to create a whole new account and start from scratch.
Shopify has better security than Big Cartel
Shopify is also a more secure platform than Big Cartel. This is because Shopify stores your data on a secure server and uses 128-bit SSL encryption to protect your information.
SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) is a protocol that provides security for communication between web browsers and servers. 128-bit encryption is one of the highest levels of encryption that is currently available.
Big Cartel also uses SSL encryption, but only for custom domains and Big Cartel addresses. This means that if you transfer your domain to Big Cartel, your site will be encrypted. But, your site will not be encrypted if you keep your domain with another provider and link it to your Big Cartel account. You will need to purchase a third-party SSL certificate to encrypt your site.
Shopify has better customer support than Big Cartel
If you need help with anything, Shopify has a team of experts that can assist you. They also have a huge knowledge base and community forum that you can access for help. In contrast, Big Cartel only offers email support.
You can contact Shopify support via phone or email 24/7. Perhaps the best way to talk to support is through live chat. This allows you to get real-time assistance with all your technical problems.
Shopify is better at handling increased traffic
If your traffic has increased and you’re starting to get more orders, then you may need a more powerful platform like Shopify. This is because Big Cartel limits the number of products you can sell and the amount of traffic your store can handle depending on your plan.
In contrast, Shopify’s platform is designed to handle increased traffic and larger orders. This is because Shopify has a server grid architecture that is able to distribute traffic evenly across all of its servers. This means that your store will not crash if you get a sudden surge in traffic or orders.
How to prepare for your migration
Back-up your data
This is an essential step in migrating from Big Cartel to Shopify because it will ensure that you have a copy of your data in case anything goes wrong.
You can use the Big Cartel Export Tool to back up your data. This tool will allow you to export all your products, orders, customers, and other data from Big Cartel into a CSV file. This ensures you have a copy of your data that you will not only export to Shopify but also be able to use if you need to revert back to Big Cartel for any reason.
You can also use third-party tools to back up your data. These tools will typically allow you to create a backup of your data in the cloud, so you can access it from anywhere.
Backing up your data is not limited to when you are transferring from Big Cartel to Shopify. Remember to do it even when you convert from Magento to Shopify, import products from Squarespace to Shopify, or transfer a website from WordPress to Shopify.
Create a Shopify account
Visit the Shopify website and click on the “Get Started” button. You will be prompted to try the 14-day free trial or enter your credit card information. Choose the 14-day free trial.
Fill in the necessary details, including your store name, email address, and password. Then click on the “Create Your Store” button.
Select the “Online Store” option. You’ll be asked to add personal details such as name, phone number, and address. These details are essential in setting up tax rates and currencies.
Add migration details
The next step is adding a few more details about yourself. Here, you’ll tell Shopify that you’re already selling online on a different platform. Shopify will ask you to identify the platform you sell on the most. Since Big Cartel is not among the options, choose “Other.” Enter your annual revenue, then click “Enter my store.”
Set up your store
Now it’s time to set up your shop. You’ll be asked to choose a theme, add products, and customize your store. There are many Shopify themes to choose from, so you’re sure to find one that fits your style.
Go to your admin area, click “Select a Theme,” and choose the theme that matches your brand best. You can play around with several themes before choosing the one that’s best for your business. If you do not want your store to look very different from what it looked like in Big Cartel, Choose a theme that’s similar to the one you had.
If you want to customize your Shopify theme to make it more appealing to your customers, the team at HeyCarson can help. Our customization services are designed to help you create a unique, branded experience for your customers. Submit a task today, and we will start working on your project ASAP.
Remember, if you had a considerable amount of traffic on your previous store, choosing a theme that is similar to what you had on Big Cartel is important. This will create continuity for your customers and make the migration process much smoother for you and for them. This is equally as important as when you migrate Prestashop to Shopify or switch from Woocommerce to Shopify.
How to transfer from Big Cartel to Shopify
Step one: export your store data from Big Cartel
This is the first and most important step because you need to have a copy of your store data before making any changes. To do this:
- Go to your Big Cartel admin panel
- Click on Orders> Shipped
- Click on the Export button located at the top right
- Choose CSV format and click Export
A pop-up will appear asking you to choose what data you want to export. Select all the options and click Export Data. This will generate a file that you can download to your computer.
Step two: import your products into Shopify
Now that you have your product data, it’s time to import it into Shopify. To do this:
- Log in to your Shopify admin panel
- Click Apps > Store Importer.
- Install the app and click Launch app.
- Under upload files, click Choose File and select the CSV file you exported from Big Cartel.
- Click Start Import.
The app will start importing your products into Shopify. Depending on your product number, this process can take a few minutes or longer.
Step three: review and update your imported data
Once all the data has been imported, look at everything to ensure it’s all there and correct. Update any product information that needs to be changed.
If you haven’t already, you may also want to add products to collections and set up Shopify’s automated email marketing.
Reviewing your data is also important when moving from Wix to Shopify or migrating OpenCart to Shopify. This is because it allows you to catch any errors that may have occurred during the import process.
Common issues you may encounter when moving from Big Cartel to Shopify
Import was successful with changes
This is one of the most common issues and is caused by incorrect mapping of fields between Big Cartel and Shopify. You can resolve this manually by clicking View Items with issues and then Update Fields.
Some products, customers, or orders failed to import
This is usually caused by invalid data in your CSV file. This includes things like invalid product types, duplicate SKUs, or missing required fields. In this case, you need to manually add each product, customer, or order that failed to import.
To do this:
- Go to your Shopify admin panel
- Click on the products, customers, or orders that failed to import
- Update the information and save the changes
- Repeat this process for each item that failed to import.
Deleting imported data
Sometimes, you may need to delete your imported data into Shopify. This could be because you made a mistake or want to start from scratch during the import process. To do this:
- Go to your Shopify admin panel
- Click the Import Complete page
- Click the Delete Import button
A dialog box will appear asking you to confirm the deletion. Click Delete Import to confirm.
That’s it! You have now successfully transferred your store from Big Cartel to Shopify. Remember, this process does not transfer sensitive information such as customer passwords. So, make sure to contact each customer and ask them to create a new password when they log in to their store account.
Migrating your store from one platform to another can be a daunting task. But, by following the steps above, you can make the process much smoother and less stressful. Good luck!
