PrestaShop to Shopify migration: complete 2022 guide

PrestaShop to Shopify migration: complete 2022 guide

As two massive e-commerce platforms, PrestaShop and Shopify are often pitted against each other. And although PrestaShop is a great e-commerce platform, there is no doubt that it has its limitations – and Shopify has solutions to these limitations.

But to reap the benefits, you first need to migrate from PrestaShop to Shopify. While it can be hard, we hope to make it a bit easier with this complete migration guide.

We’ll cover why moving to Shopify is the smart choice, how some features compare, and 3 ways to migrate your store.

Why migrate from PrestaShop to Shopify?

To an outsider, Shopify and PrestaShop seem very similar. They are both massive e-commerce platforms and host an array of overlapping features. Both of these platforms let you host an online store, customize it to your liking, display products, and sell to consumers.

But there are some key benefits that make Shopify a better choice.

Benefits of using Shopify vs PrestaShop

Running cost

The biggest difference presented by these two platforms is their running costs.

Shopify is a hosted platform that runs on a paid subscription basis. The subscription price can range anywhere from $9 to $300 and offer users the chance to use their sophisticated and user-friendly e-commerce platform.

PrestaShop is an open-source platform that doesn’t require users to pay unless they want some premium themes or add-ons. Because it is open source, you have access to your store code and are required to handle updates and installation yourself.

This can be very hard, even for somebody with some tech know-how. This might require you to hire a developer to build your store, which can quickly add up to a massive bill. You will also always have to rely on outside help to install add-ons and manage updates.

While you do have to pay a monthly fee to use Shopify, many store owners have come to realize that the benefits offered by Shopify are worth the cost.

Mobile responsive

Shopify offers an array of free and paid themes that users can use to customize their store. While they are all beautiful, their biggest win is that most of them are mobile-friendly and optimized to work on any screen size.

PrestaShop users who had previously only optimized their content for desktops felt the shift. But rebuilding or resizing your store can be a lot of work, especially for a user who is already struggling with the coding-dominant platform.

Migrating because of Shopify themes isn’t unheard of. It’s a massive lure for users and one of the reasons people also chose to migrate from Magento and Big Cartel to Shopify

You also won’t be stuck with a rigid theme format. Besides the extensive customization options, you can also submit a task and hire a developer for specific tweaks or features. With Shopify, you won’t be stuck trying to figure out coding or customization by yourself.

With their varied, responsive, and customizable theme options, you will be able to easily establish your unique brand and sell across all devices.

User interface

Shopify’s biggest selling point is its ease of use. It was built to be an all-in-one e-commerce platform that removes the difficulties faced by laymen when they venture into online entrepreneurial endeavors.

This is a common problem open source users face. Unlike PrestaShop which requires some basic coding or users to be tech savvy, Shopify works for everyone. Their interface is easy but doesn’t take away from the power their platform offers users.

With the Merchant Dashboard, users have access to the front and backend of their store. You are still able to climb into the nitty-gritty parts of your store, but it has been made understandable with the interface.

Besides the initial change, getting the hang of Shopify’s interface will be a breeze, even for complete beginners.

Shop security

Shopify offers security and safety for all categories presented by the PCI Security Standards Council. They are an international forum established to set certain standards for online transactions.

With Shopify, your online shop, cart purchases, and web hosting are safe, secure, and regularly updated. You don’t have to manually handle any of these updates.

With PrestaShop, on the other hand, you would have to use add-ons to cover any additional security concerns. It makes for a risky situation, especially for store owners that might not know better and forgot to cover some of their bases.

Shopify offers secure stores and purchasing options across all their subscriptions. It offers users peace of mind, knowing they are secure without having to handle the installs and updates themselves.

Migrating from PrestaShop to Shopify: a step-by-step guide

If you don’t have a Shopify account yet, create one before moving on to any of the below migration steps. Just open an account, choose your subscription plan, and follow the prompts.

Shopify has made its setup very easy. It won’t take long and with their easy prompts, you will be ready to migrate to Shopify in no time.

Method 1: manual migration

Manual migration refers to the process of manually moving your data from one place to another.

This is done in 2 ways:

  • CSV files using import/export options
  • Copy and paste

CSV migration

CSV (comma-separated value) files are often used to move big amounts of data in compressed files and use the import and export option on Shopify.

We will be exporting your PrestaShop data and then importing the data to your Shopify account.

First, we need to export your data from PrestaShop. Shopify offers a module ZIP file that you must install in PrestaShop to export the data.

Step 1: Export store data from PrestaShop.
  • Download the module ZIP file from Shopify’s migration manual page.
  • Log in to your PrestaShop admin and navigate to the Modules section.
  • Click on Modules manager and then select Upload a module
  • From the options select the module ZIP file you downloaded earlier and install it.
  • When the module has been installed, click on Configure
  • After the configuration is complete, click on the Export option. This will save a ZIP containing your store data to your desktop.
Step 2: Import the store data to Shopify.
  • Log in to your Shopify account.
  • Install the Shopify Importer tool to successfully import your store data.
  • Go back to your Merchant Dashboard and under Apps, open the Store Importer app.
  • There will be a page labeled Import your data into Shopify. On the available dropdown menu, choose the PrestaShop option.
  • Click on Upload File and then choose to Add file
  • Select the file you downloaded in step 1.
  • Click on Continue import and then confirm by choosing Import

Your imported data will now be in your Admin. Check the data to make sure everything looks fine. There might be some changes that you can manually change. If it didn’t import the way you wanted, you can import the data again, on top of the existing data.

This method is an easy at-home method for migration and is often used to migrate WordPress and Squarespace data to Shopify. It works best for stores with too much data to copy and paste but who don’t want to pay for an automated or assisted migration.

Copy and paste migration

As the name suggests, you will copy the store data and paste it into your Shopify store. It’s a very basic but easy method to migrate data and is often used to migrate Wix to Shopify because it’s mostly text.

  • Highlight the data you want to migrate
  • Copy the data by pressing Ctrl+C or right-clicking and choosing the Copy option.
  • Navigate to your Shopify account and to where you want to paste the data. Once there, either press Ctrl+V or right-click again and choose Paste
  • Review the data and make any changes before pressing Save

This method is free but time-consuming. It will work best for smaller stores that just want to migrate a small number of products, blog posts, privacy policies, and other descriptive data.

Method 2: automated migration

Automated migration is a favorite when migrating Opencart and Bigcommerce to Shopify.  It’s great because of how easy it is to use and the sheer amount of data you can move in one go.

The same applies to migrating from PrestaShop to Shopify. With automated migration, the software takes care of the migration for you. It can take a while, depending on the software you use, but runs in the background.

While the method might differ, most automated migrations will require 3 things from you.

  • A source destination: this will be where you are migrating from and in this case PrestaShop.
  • A target destination: this will be where you want the migrated data to be integrated and in this case Shopify.
  • Entities: you will be allowed to choose what specific data you want to migrate from PrestaShop to Shopify. The selection of available entities will depend on the software you choose. Make sure they offer migration for the data you want to move to Shopify.

This method is easily the best way to move for big or small stores. It takes the pressure off your shoulders and, besides assisted migration, is the most likely to achieve the results you want.

Method 3: assisted migration

Assisted migration uses the help of an IT specialist. With this method, you can specify exactly what you want to be moved and any changes you want to be added to the data.

Often used to migrate store data like Woocommerce to Shopify, assisted migration will give you the most control over how your store is moved and changed from the move. Just tell the specialist what data you would like to keep during the migration and what you would like to change.

Hiring a specialist to move your store can be expensive. We suggest this method for owners that have a flexible budget and a lot of data to move and/or change during the migration.

Shopify has dominated the e-commerce market and will do so in the foreseeable future. While PrestaShop offers amazing free features, the benefits of using Shopify easily outweighs the subscription cost.

With this guide,  you will be able to make an informed choice about which method of migration you choose, navigate the moving process, and enjoy the benefits of working with Shopify’s platform.
