Shopify: upload files in 9 easy steps

Are you looking to upload a file to Shopify, but can’t quite figure out how? We’ve got you covered.

As a business owner, you most likely want to personalize your Shopify store so that it is unique and efficient.  While Shopify themes do help with this, you also want to upload your own files that contain anything from product pictures, informational files, or your logo.

Luckily, Shopify file uploads are not as complicated as some people make them out to be.

We have a quick, simple, and easy method to do this that doesn’t contain Shopify liquid coding, or any form of coding, for that matter.

How to upload files to Shopify

Below, we are going to discuss how to upload a file to your Shopify website. But, before you upload files and make too many changes to your website, we recommend either duplicating your Shopify store or doing a Shopify backup

That way, you know that if you make a mistake whilst editing or adding things to your website, your original Shopify site will still be accessible.

Take note that you can upload files when you first open your Shopify account, or you can do this a few months or years down the line too.

If you are doing it when you first open your account and your Shopify SSL is still pending, do not worry about this too much. Your uploads will still be safe, and the SSL issue should be verified in two days’ time.

Step 1: Go to your settings page on Shopify

  1. Log in to your Shopify admin page.
  2. Click on the button that says “Settings”. This will be found in the lower corner on the left of your screen.

Step 2: Select the “Files”

  1. In your settings, there will be a button labeled “files” in the middle row. Click on this.

Step 3: Click on the “Upload files” option

  1. Click on the button that says “Upload files”. This should be located near the top right of your screen.
  2. This will open your documents on your computer. Choose which document or picture you would like to upload and click on it.

Step 4: Copy the URL of the file that has just been uploaded

This uploaded file will now present with a URL in the “Upload files” section. This URL can now be used to upload the files to your Shopify home page.

The first thing you need to do for this process is to copy the URL.

  1. Highlight the entire URL.
  2. Click on CTRL + C.

Step 5: Go to your home page, and select the option where it lets you edit it

If you want to add the file to your home page, you are going to have to make the changes on the home page itself. You can upload the file by creating a new section, or adding the file to a section already in existence.

For example, the file you upload might be a variant of a product that already exists. Just make sure that you check if you’re close to the Shopify variant limit before you try to add too many.

For the purpose of this article, though, we are going to explain how to upload the file to a new section.

So, to start this process, you need to edit the home page, as mentioned.

  1. Go to your Shopify store’s home page.
  2. Click on the button that says “Edit home page”. This should be located at the bottom of your screen in the right-hand corner.

Step 6: Select “Add section”

Once the editing commences, there will be different options displayed in a column on the left-hand side of your screen.

  1. Look for the option that says “Add section”.
  2. Select this option.

Step 7: Add the appropriate section

After clicking on “Add section”, the different section options will appear in the left column. Examples of sections you can choose from are things like blogs, products, images, collections, and store information.

Choose the section that is appropriate for your uploaded file.

For the sake of this article, we are going to choose to create a blog section.

In this section, there will be space laid out for you to write headings and blog posts. There will also be a button option that you can link your file to.

Clicking on this button will bring up your file in a separate tab. This button can be edited in the left column of the page.

  1. Click on the option that says “Button label”.
  2. Type in what words you want to appear on your clickable button.
  3. Go to where it says “Button link”.
  4. Paste the URL of your file that you copied earlier on.
  5. Save your changes once you are finished with all the other elements too.

Step 9: Make sure that everything works

Go to your Shopify home page and test out your link addition. Sometimes things don’t save properly, or you might have not copied the link properly. You want to avoid customers complaining about this, so make sure that you check it out yourself first.

  1. Go to the section that you added.
  2. Click on the button that you altered and added the link to.
  3. Make sure that the file is correctly uploaded.
