We manufacture 3D printer filament in the US and have been using the Empire theme since approximately 2018. It's been a very solid theme for us up to this point and we appreciate that it continues to be developed. They are very quick to add new features, functionality, and compatibility with new Shopify features, which we also appreciate.
Describe the experience
I've been pleasantly surprised with the responsiveness of the support team. I REALLY like that this developer makes this theme compatible with new Shopify relatively quickly. I'm not on the newest version as I have some hardcoded things in my theme that I worry about breaking, but I'm making it a part of my plan to upgrade to the newest version in the next 6 months.

About the Shopify business
My Shopify store uses the Theme Empire 7.11, it's good, and it does what it is supposed to do. The products that we sell are mainly Barber and Beauty items, we sell almost everything from hair gels and hair clippers to monomero and eyelashes. We launched in 2015 our target markets are Barbers and Hairstylists, the business has been growing.
Describe the experience
I like the Empire theme, the only bad thing that I could say as constructive feedback is that is always an update, and the app that helps do the update never copies the whole code correctly so pretty much I always have to hire somebody to do an update and it's not that easy to do it neither, maybe Empire can work on making a friendly updater, so we all can do it every time that needs to.
Shopify is good but has been changing a lot, I my opinion some changes were good but they had made many bad changes that make the job harder, you need to know to code for many things, if you just want a basic store and nothing out of the ordinary then you should be cool. One other thing that I would say is that for the orders there is no such Picklist from all of the approved orders, so when I go to my Warehouse I can not go with a list of products that I need.

Healthy meal prep delivery service. Launched 3 years ago targeting the fitness and health conscious demographic in Miami with discretionary income. It is going well with the new theme. Really enjoy the quick shop feature for all of the products. It allows customers to view the macros of a meal without leaving the page.

Love the quick shop feature for all products. The search bar at the top of the header is a great gesture. Smart product filter app helps me to make your full product page smoother. I use the product tags to create categories based on the macros of each meal. Filtering is easier for the customers.

I do not like that the header of the website minimizes itself when you scroll. It converts itself into a smaller menu with no headings. Having the headings on a sticky header would help.

About the Shopify business
We sell a variety of sound healing instruments, mostly Native-style flutes but also some singing bowls, rattles and percussion instruments. Our most extensive collection is Native-style flutes with more than 24 varieties. We also carry accessories for those instruments, in addition to books, CDs, online courses, and pieces of training. We ramped things up in 2019 by adding more products to our store, and it continues to grow monthly. Our target audience is mainly retired and now has time to enjoy a slower pace of life and practice the benefits of healing music-making.
We chose this theme because we felt that it would work best with our growing number of SKUs and Collections. It's so easy to use with all these different blocks available and built-in marketing options like the banners and we absolutely love the MEGA NAV! When Shopify 2.0 was released and we could then use these options in other pages than the select few, we really harnessed better options for our store. Well done! I love this theme!

As I mentioned, we absolutely love the MEGA NAV option and the ease with which we can drag and drop the different blocks. Being able to quickly update that announcement bar at the very top of our website was a game-changer, too. Plus, the theme works really one mobile.

The menus are built to be really easy to set up and to narrow choices down very easily. The set up provides a seamless integration and the checkout experience make transactions easy. We like the feel and mood that the home page graphics give us and they are super easy to change out.

Motorsports industry business started a long time ago that decided to make a stronger push into ecommerce a few years ago. We target vehicle recreation, transport, industrial, agricultural and even some emergency services. Growth has been steady year after year, and are confident it that will continue over the next few years.
Describe the experience
We needed a theme that scaled to the degree we needed, as the motorsports industry has a massive line of products we need to keep up with. This theme allows for a ton of growing room for your product catalog while also offering some helpful features that aren't in your basic theme. Empire also has a lot of tools available to make your site look fresh on both desktop and mobile to save yourself on graphic design work. Overall it's been a great theme, and we recommend it for small to large ecommerce needs.

Some more ways to lay out links in the meganav. Maybe offer more in the way of using images to represent a menu option. Like an icon to the left of a menu option, representing what's contained in the collection it leads to.

We work to sell premium bras at sale prices. We work with small bra stores to buy past season merchandise, or we work with store closures to find the highest quality bras at hard to find sale prices. Our goal is to give customers great deals and offer small bra stores a service.
Describe the experience
The Empire theme was brought to our attention for its ability to handle large amounts of products and able to display them in an easy, digestable way for the customer. We mixed Empire theme's layout with a filter app that allows our customers to narrow their search to only the sizes and/or brands they are interested. This helps the customer save time and not have to scroll endlessly. We also love the way the variants are displayed. We are not a fan of drop down menus and Empire offers us a feature to display sizes in boxes.

I would also like to able to have a functionality where customers sign up for automatic notifications when their sizes are loaded into the system. I can do a size within a product, but I need a way to capture just size variants regardless of products.

We sell flooring, tiles, and accessories. Along with being online, we started off as brick-n-mortar around 1 year ago. We realized online would be the most beneficial way to do business as it requires less cost. We are now pushing to be completely online but we know that it'll take a while especially since our market hasn't ever bought these kinds of products online.

The Shopify theme is fairly easy to use but we recommend having a developer work on things nonetheless. It's fairly straight forward but customization options such as setting up the different category pages are fairly confusing. Others in our industry are using the same theme so we had to make quite a bit of customization to make ours look different.

We have had multiple people email us to say that the drop down menu disappears on their screens when they try to hover. We haven't been able to troubleshoot this on our own and the developer wasn't helpful on the issue.

The theme provides flexible options to customize our pages. The product page layout is good, although not the best. The basic layout resembles those used by Wayfair and other big e-commerce stores. It screams "huge" and "trustworthy".
The main drawback is probably the speed. I would say it's not the fastest theme out there. Product slider animation on Safari browser (iOS) is also a bit laggy, which is quite annoying.
Overall, we have a pretty good conversion using Empire. Our store looks more trustworthy and branded.

Consider making the theme more lightweight. So website loading speed doesn't take a toll. Compared to Dawn and Turbo, Empire is much slower, at least in our experience. Also, please take a look at the product slider on mobile (iOS, Safari). It's laggy and causes poor UX. Hope you guys will fix it.

Pretty good experience. Don't like the way the front page had to be rebuilt when a major upgrade was released. Overall, relatively fast for the user experience and graphical intensity it provides.
Overall it's design is seamless from desktop to tablet to mobile with easy navigation.
Would recommend to small shops or those looking to avoid a lot of custom design work by a designer. It's good out of the box.

The only thing I would recommend is the upgrade from version to version be done with the ability to maintain front page design. It took me a lot of hours to recreate what had already been done. Also, since it's the only theme I've used, not sure whether the image browser can be improved or if that's a Shopify thing. Can't search images and have a hard time getting back to images that were uploaded a while ago.

I would like to see a more robust in-store pick up for customers to maybe have a login with a status bar. And on the customer account page it would be nice to have more of a dashboard for the customer to re order or see order status.

Hooked is a retail seafood store/fish market with three physical locations plus e-commerce for local delivery/curbside pick up. Launched in (surprise) 2020 to accommodate lockdowns and customers who could not come into stores.
We primarily use our site for education, and holiday specials to streamline orders for heavy volume periods plus events (cooking classes). We use a plug in to streamline delivery and order date picking.
Describe the experience
The homepage is easy to change around, the tiles are great for changing up the focus for customers browsing on a computer. For mobile users, it is pretty much a scroll through the boxes experience.
The blog pages and pages have one option (unless you get a plug in) - one picture, text below.
The product pages and collections are all standard/easy to use but scream SHOPIFY. If you're looking for unique - this is not your answer.
If you're looking for functional out of the box - you're in the right place.

The best part of the Empire theme is the "Mosaic" of tiles. Options for a primary and secondary button in two colour pallets. Plus, it's super easy to change the image and link it to any part of the site.
If there were more primary/secondary options like this a bit deeper into the theme. If Shopify wasn't Shopify no matter what you did, then it would be 5-stars all the way.

About the Shopify business
I have a large disc golf store with lots of products, so I needed a theme designed to handle large catalogs. We primarily sell disc golf discs and carry a wide range of manufacturers like Discraft, Discmania, Kastaplast, Dynamic Discs, Clash Discs, and tons more. This theme works great for the site.
Describe the experience
Overall it was an easy experience using this theme. I wanted some very specific customizations, which I hired a developer to implement, but for the most part, this theme has all the features you would need out of the box. It is also coded relatively cleanly and passes Google tests with flying colors.

About the Shopify business
We sell locks and key supplies to people who work with locks and keys (we call them #Lockboss). We sell many small parts and pieces like key blanks and lock pins. We needed a theme that easily could handle many items. The Empire theme has been great to work with and has met our expectations.
Describe the experience
The customizable blocks on the pages allow us to make a unique website but without a bunch of extra code work. Also, the Empire 2.0 theme was available in a timely manner which was great as we use a lot of metafields. Overall we are very happy to use the Empire theme by Pixel Union.

The theme has been very easy to use, we've been able to customize it with mediocre to no development skills. For a store with a large number of SKUs that's looking for an elegant design, I'd recommend Empire.
